Serov, General Ivan
1905–1968
   Serov was a secret police Commander responsible for many mass deportations and executions throughout the war. In 1939–40 he took charge of the ‘Sovietization’ of the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, deporting undesirables to labor camps. He then served as Commissar for Internal Affairs (under KHRUSHCHEV) heading the NKVD and was responsible for the mass deportation of 3.5 million Ukrainians to the east. In 1941 he became Deputy Commissar for State Security under BERIA and in 1943–44 organized the deportation of dissident ethnic groups to Siberia. Serov became Deputy Supreme Commander of Soviet forces in Germany in 1945 and Head of ‘Smersh.’
